Risk and the Stack

The start of managing risk - the Stack and Risk

Note that as you go up the stack the level of "risk" associated with that layer goes up. Why? You'll notice that as you go up it gets more proprietary. For example, how many people can help address an issue with electricity? Well, how many electricians are there within 10 miles of your server? Probably 100s. But how many people are there who realliy know your code - you're big if it's more than a dozen - in the world! So, where's the real risk to up time?
